About the event
Join us in Adelaide for a special technical presentation from internationally recognised materials scientist Prof. Christoph Leyens, Managing Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS and Professor of Materials Technology at Dresden University of Technology.
Prof. Leyens will present “Laser-based heat treatment, cladding and additive manufacturing for industry – current status and future developments”, exploring the latest developments in laser-based manufacturing technologies and their growing applications across industry.
The presentation will examine advances in laser heat treatment, cladding, surface engineering and additive manufacturing, together with current industrial applications and emerging opportunities for future materials and manufacturing technologies.
This session will be particularly relevant to professionals and students working across materials engineering, corrosion and surface protection, coatings, welding, asset integrity, additive manufacturing, advanced manufacturing and research and development.
Attendees are invited to stay following the presentation for morning tea and networking from 11:00 am.
About Prof Christoph Leyens
Fraunhofer IWS and Dresden University of Technology
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Leyens is Professor of Materials Technology at Dresden University of Technology (TU Dresden) and Managing Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS in Dresden. He studied Materials Science and Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, where he also earned his Ph.D. and Habilitation. Prior to joining TU Dresden in 2009, he held academic and leadership positions at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus.
His research focuses on advanced metallic and high-temperature materials, surface engineering, coatings, laser-based manufacturing technologies, and additive manufacturing. Prof. Leyens has authored more than 350 scientific publications, numerous books and book chapters, and holds several patents. He has supervised a more than 70 doctoral researchers and has established extensive international collaborations with leading universities and research institutions worldwide.
In addition to his academic and research activities, he serves on various scientific advisory boards and is a member of the Executive Board of acatech, the German National Academy of Science and Engineering. Through his work at TU Dresden and Fraunhofer IWS, he actively contributes to the development of innovative materials and manufacturing technologies for sustainable industrial applications.
